AirPods Pro: A Month Later

I recently posted that I finally pulled the trigger on some AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) and my early impressions, and how I would provide an update after I’ve had some time to give them a good try. So, here we are.

Comfort

I still find the AirPods Pro to be incredibly comfortable. weight was an issue that I was concerned about, and when I first tried them in my ears, I was pleasantly surprised. After a few good walks, wearing them around the house, and even while doing some gardening, I must say that they are incredibly comfortable. I haven’t had any issues with them at all.

ANC (Active Noise Cancellation)

The ANC is something that I have mixed feelings about. While the ANC is really good in quiet areas, I find the extent of the noise cancellation to be a mixed bag. Sometimes the ANC is crazy good and scrubbing out the background sound in loud areas, and other times, it may only make a small difference.

I recently went to a big tech conference and while waiting alone in a busy line, I popped my Pods in and listened to some music. I found that I had to turn the volume up to help drown out some of the sound, but later on when I was outside in the wind, I found the ANC did a great job of cutting the sound of the wind out, providing a very quite noise floor for clear audio playback.

I walked to work and found that the sound of the traffic was bleeding through my music. I was so sure that ANC was turned off that I checked my settings to make sure, even going as far to reseat them in my ears, and once again, I turned the volume up to help drown out the sound of the traffic.

When it works, it does a really great job, but I wish that it was more adept at cutting out the sound.

Battery

It’s taken me some time to get used to the battery. Due to being used to the battery life of headphones, the AirPods keep me wanting to charge them after every use, which isn’t ideal. In the past week I have made a conscious effort not to charge them unless necessary, which I haven’t had to do this week, but I know that if I will be needing them for a full day, I will charge fully prior.

Multi-Device

Having the ability to effortlessly switch between my Apple devices and not have to fiddle around repairing is a godsend. I was already accustomed to this feature from using my Beats, but I didn’t utilize it to the same extent that I have found myself doing with the AirPods.

Summary

In all, I still really like the AirPods Pro. They’re small, convenient, and sound good. I wish for the ANC for be better, but I can live with it. I am personally happy with my purchase, and can see myself using them a lot more where I wouldn’t have previously done so with my old Beats Studio³. Could I recommend them? Maybe, it depends on what you’re looking for in your earphones. If you have multiple Apple devices and tend to switch between them, then I would recommend them, but you can get similar functionality with Beats headphones and earphones, and typically for cheaper. If money is no option, or you can get them for similar prices, I would probably say to go for the AirPods, purely for the tracking functionality incase they get lost or stolen.
