Dishonored: First Impressions.

When Dishonored was first announced I watched the trailer with sheer hopes that it wouldn’t turn out quite as bad as Brink turned out, in my opinion Bethesda should try to stick to publishing their own games like The Elder Scrolls or Fallout series. I watched the trailer of Dishonored and found myself again as I was when watching the trailer for Brink, completely zoned out giving every drop of my attention to the screen, absorbing everything the trailer had to show only to be disappointed upon its release.

Last week we picked up a copy of dishonored and couldn’t wait to get our dirty hands into it. Once we washed off the bad karma left behind from reviewing crap games, we slipped the disc into our Xbox 360 and booted the sucker up.

As with 99 per cent of all games we were met with the title menu which in my opinion left much to be desired, I don’t know about you readers but I think it’s unneeded when a developer sets a menu up to display the game’s world in the background, saying this though it really wasn’t that bad, quite elegant as was the title menu for Red Dead Redemption. We pressed the A button a couple of times and got stuck in.

The graphics we thought were great though some textures looked rather shabby, though the game cannot be blamed as it has to be downplayed to run smoothly on consoles, that and those textures weren’t as important as others and really didn’t deter from the games visuals. Things look good where they need to look good and that is what matters most.

Character design is reminiscent of Brink and Fable, like a mixture between the two only more refined. Dressed in similar attire to what was worn by the military in colonial America, my only problem is how characters mount their pistols on the front of their jackets, it seems more of a hindrance than it would be useful.

The world design is rough, dirty and full of hatred, yet so beautiful. Separated into different districts by Walls of Light and patrolled by watch guards and overseers, the city of Dunwall reminds me very much of City 17, the world in which Half-Life 2 is based. The only thing the world of Dishonored lacks is a full open world experience, I felt would’ve made the game complete. A great thing about Dunwall is the amount of little places you can explore or hide in, from rooms within abandoned apartment blocks to sewers. Even out in the streets you can hide under objects and sneak out to make a kill.

So far in Dishonored I have received my powers, mask, weapons and killed on of the high overseers and I will be playing a lot more soon. For now this is my first impressions, I hope you enjoyed reading, expect a full review of Dishonored to come in the next week or so.
