Too Much Too Fast? – My review of Assassin’s Creed III

420809_10150595213037950_97737872949_9207441_209231097_n-noscaleFor a couple of months I’ve owned Assassin’s Creed III and it has taken me until now to play it. I figured that it would be hard for Ubisoft to produce another Assassin’s Creed game that could surpass the likes of two through Revelations. I finally decided to give it a go and provide all of you my public display of affection, so here is my review of Assassin’s Creed III.

I found myself confused upon starting Assassin’s Creed III, why did Desmond look different? Where are they going now and how is this continuing from Revelations? There was allot of questions that were being thrown around and I wasn’t sure if I was going to get any answers. I supposed that all questions were to be answered as I progressed through the game.

I had a lot to learn.

The tutorial mission left much to be desired and felt like Ubisoft were using it to say “Hey look, we changed the button mapping because you know, whole new game, whole new engine and everything.” I kept jumping in the wrong directions, falling off things and at one point I found myself going back to manually restart an objective because the game hadn’t detected that I’d done it the first time around. I began finding myself getting more and more frustrated and I weren’t even fully into the game at that point.

Finally the tutorial ended and I was playing as my simulated ancestor, Haytham Kenway. I had to quietly and covertly manoeuvre myself around a theatre to assassinate a target, this was simple enough and but seemed rather boring, and as the mission progressed I figured out why I was here and who I was and what I was about to do.

Next thing I know I’m on a boat to America to find out the secrets to the hidden room of the first civilisation, at this point I’d found myself beginning to become attached to Haytham and I began enjoying things a little more, I found myself more relaxed and laid back whilst I was aboard the vessel, but as quickly as I’d enjoyed it things had changed again. Out of nowhere the ship I was aboard was attacked by enemies I could only imagine were Templars, we defeated them and then I’ve landed on American soil.

So far I’d enjoyed it but things were just moving way to fast. I understand that Assassin’s Creed II started off a little skippy but at least we had a general idea of what was going on, Assassin’s Creed III was just jumping forwards in leaps and bounds, leaving little evidence that you had even done anything prior to this moment.

I’d continued the game cautiously optimistic, and then a huge plot twist arrived that I found amazing! I was really eager to carry on playing but then everything changed for the worst.

I was now playing as young Connor Kenway who even as a child was a disappointment, not just his character but the atmosphere of the Indian Tribe was a let-down, not to mention the fact that the tribesman’s music could be heard from anywhere outside of the walls of the camp.

The story would’ve been so much better if only Ubisoft had structured it similar to that of Ezio, his life span was evenly set out and there wasn’t much we had missed, even though Ezio was much older in Revelations we knew why in the opening cut scene. The story of Haytham and Connor just happens too fast and we miss out large chunks of their life, this reason alone for me was a spoiler as I felt an emotional attachment to Ezio and thanks to Revelations, I even felt for Altaïr but nothing for Connor, I had developed an attachment towards Haytham as he was charismatic and engaging. Connor had nothing going for him and in my opinion was just a kid full of angst who was too foolhardy to think things out straight, and he was brash as an adult.

I think that’s enough of the story line, I don’t want to let anymore cats out of the bag so let’s move onto something else, shall we?

Sometimes I found myself in the unfortunate event of fighting guards but not making any form of damage what so ever, I was smashing him with my tomahawk and he just kept stumbling backwards having not been hurt by the repeating blows, I think I’d probably die if I were to be hit in the face with a tomahawk even once, yet this guard was being resilient and just wouldn’t die. Another problem I had with guards was that in cut scenes you would hear mention of a lack of guards on duty due to dwindling numbers, yet if you attacked a guard you’d be face with tons of them, usually in groups of three and four leaving you to fight of around 20-30 guards at a time, no wonder numbers are dwindling but the question is where are they getting their recruits?

Graphically I think that Ubisoft tried too hard with the detail in characters and not enough with the actual world, I found more detailed textures in the shoes of an NPC than some areas of the world, trees for instance looked really poor, and rocks while not being an important item in world design looked like simple greyish blobs.

Me and Connor were walking through a town when suddenly a horse drawn cart passed us by, with each bump it trampled over the cart just moved, it didn’t bounce but just tipped to its right and back again, as if there was no physics involved at all. I was stumped by this and Connor just seemed to not care as he was just a hateful teen filled with angst.

I know that in video games they can’t have a million different and unique characters, yet in Assassin’s Creed III they seem to only have a handful. During cut scenes I’d noticed that there was an awful lot of the same characters, some even passed themselves by. I don’t know about you all but this to me seems really shoddy, especially when you see a couple of identical NPCs talking to each other, or themselves?

I enjoyed combat in Assassin’s Creed very much. In other games combat was really easy but I found myself much more comfortable with the new controls, though only in full fights, in stealth I found myself constantly swapping between my tomahawk and my bow or even sheathing my weapon by mistake. The GUI has mostly stayed the same but in Assassin’s Creed III they’ve swapped the map and weapon icons to the opposite side of the screen, normally this isn’t anything bad but it I just can’t get used to it.

Speaking of GUI, the camera just doesn’t feel the same in Assassin’s Creed III, it feels like more of a chase cam, similar to the camera in GTA IV when you turn a corner and the camera has to turn it a few seconds after. I found that this camera was off putting and annoying but there is nothing I could do about it.

Finally the weapon selection screen was very annoying and a pain in the butt, I just didn’t think that having an out of game menu for choosing what tools you want for your trade would be that annoying, it would’ve been better if it would just pause the game and the same menu with an opaque background would load so that it didn’t take as long to load or deter away from the game.

I think in conclusion, Assassin’s Creed III could have made a great addition to the series but hadn’t stood up to the standards set by previous games, I believe that it would’ve probably been better off as its own game as the game didn’t have the same feeling as its predecessors. If Ubisoft had have taken more time to refine their ideas and work on certain bugs it cou
